Somebody That We Used To Know
December 2, 2022
I think we can all agree that one of the best songs of all time is “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye and Kimbra. It doesn’t matter what type of music you usually listen to- at one point or another you’ve probably heard this song.
This masterpiece came out in 2011 and talks about a break-up. A couple breaks up, and the girl acts like nothing happened. The guy gets upset and tells her that he doesn’t care either and never needed her anyway. The girl gets angry because she realizes how much he manipulated her during their relationship.
This song was an absolute hit. It reached number one in more than 23 national charts, and charted top 10 in about 30 countries. By the end of 2012, the song became the best-selling song of the year with 11.8 million copies sold. This song also ranked among the best-selling singles of all time, and won two awards at the 2013 grammys.
Not only was “Somebody That I Used to Know” his first song, but it would soon be his last. After he released this song in 2011, he never released another song ever again. Goyte really takes “one hit wonder” to the next level.
This was the start to a new era. He hasn’t released anything else under his stage name “Gotye,” but he’s been quite active elsewhere. Australian, Wally De Backer (Goyte) is in a band called ‘The Basics.’ They perform internationally and even doing a few shows in the United States.
In 2014, Goyte released a newsletter stating that he will no longer be releasing music as Gotye. He offered little explanations on why, but he did talk about some of his other projects with ‘The Basics.’
I think we were all hoping for a more dramatic story, but Gotye is doing just fine making music and traveling the world.
