Hidden Hazards

In a world of radiant skin, luscious lashes, and pearly whites, everyone has their favorite products they use from dusk ‘til dawn.  While you’re focusing what’s on the outside, you may may overlook what’s inside your cosmetics and toiletries. If you take a look at the labels, you might find yourself spewing and stuttering over nonsensical sounding words and phrases; therefore, making any sense of those long lists of unfamiliar products can be difficult and overwhelming.

A few products you might be unsuspecting of having harmful products are the majority of sunscreen products, toothpaste, and mascara. Most products on the market contain chemicals known for endocrine disruption and inflammation risk.  Your endocrine system consists of a network of glands that release hormones into your body.  Interfering with this system can lead to the weakening of your immune system, developmental abnormalities, metabolic disorders, and even hormone-related cancers.  Consumer favorite sunscreen brands like La Roche-Posay, Banana Boat, and Coppertone all contain ingredients notorious for diruption to human hormones and marine life, making coral less resistant to high temperatures– Avobenzone and Octocrylene.  Many cosmetic products contain parabens, preservatives, and fragrance, all of which are also hormone disrupting and inflammatory.  Examples of products that contain said hidden hazards are L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara, Covergirl Fit Me Foundation, Benefit Hoola Bronzer, and Rare Beauty Liquid Blush.

Now, instead of panicking, throwing away hundreds of dollars of products,  and thinking that everything is poisonous, it’s important to realize that there are alternatives to the staples in your everyday routine.  While they might not be as trendy or prestigious, good health will always be appreciated; this can be proved by the trending “Clean Girl Aesthetic” on TikTok and pretty much any other social media platform TikTok’s users spill over to.  Finally, I’d like to leave you with a list of alternative products that you might like to incorporate into your routine:
