The varsity boys’ soccer team played three games at Smithson Valley High School in a 5A and 6A tournament. On Thursday, Jan. 10, at the beginning of the tournament, they started out slow for their first game. In the first half against San Antonio Veterans Memorial, FHS gave up two goals. FHS came back stronger for the second half, with a goal by Christin Castruita. Memorial scored two more times ending the game with a 4-1 score.

FHS then played against Pearland Dawson where the offense was strong. The game was back and forth keeping FHS ahead until the last five minutes of the game. Dawson scored tying the game 3-3. All three FHS goals were scored by Alex Silva.

The final game against Smithson Valley was their best game according to Coach Shannon Petsch. In the first 10 minutes of the game, Smithson Valley scored. After that goal, the FHS defense started to pick up, and the ball started to move. In the second half, FHS scored and so did Smithson Valley. At the end of the game, Smithson Valley outscored the Billies 4-1, with the lone goal scored by Alex Silva.

“Not too happy about not winning the game, but proud of the way the players responded,” Petsch said, “We were pretty beat up going in to the tournament, and the players found enough to make the last game very competitive.  Players got a lot of experience.  Everyone had to play and they all responded well.”

The Billies next games will be at a tournament on Jan. 18-19 in Wimberley for a tournament against Leander Glenn, Salado and Liberty Hill.
